So:

I have been working part-time in circulation since November 2012

I will be starting my MLS (if all goes well) in September at the earliest; January at the latest.

In the meantime, I’m going to be looking for promotions I’m qualified for until I finish this degree.

I’m part-time right now (anywhere between 13-17 hours a week, usually). I would consider myself very motivated, but as a first-gen college grad, the idea of more loans is really intimidating. But I know that if this is what I want (and being in the field confirms to me that this is definitely what I want), the advanced degree is necessary.

So, I’d really like to know:

How good of a shot at a job do you think I’d have with the MLS and (when it’s completed) two years of experience in a library?

How many credits a semester should I take realistically? I consider myself very bright and motivated, but that can only take someone so far before they burn out.

Any advice for someone in my position?

Also, if you guys could send me some love/support, I’d appreciate it. My family sees this as the dumbest thing on the face of the planet…

I’m not qualified to comment, but I am qualified for love/support and signal boosting!

First things first…

Ok, now that that is out of the way… here are some answers:

1. It is always helpful to have library experience no matter how minute you may think it is. You already have a little bit of experience with the inner workings of a library

2. I think all programs are 36 credits? Right? ~~Someone set me straight if I’m wrong.~~ Anyways, I tried to take 15 credits an semester, but my adviser advised ~~(ha)~~ against it, so I only took 12 credits, but I was also a full time student. If you are part time, I would suggest less.

3. Advice? Try out a bunch of different classes to find your niche. Play nice with the other library students b/c these are the peeps that you are going to network with after you get your degree. Finally, have fun!

Hey there! I just graduated from library school and am applying for le jobs, so I can comment up to getting a job, but not to actually obtaining one. I’m getting interviews! I’m hopeful!

1. That is WAY more library experience than I had entering my degree program. Volunteer, work, play, etc. as much as you can in a library setting, preferably one that lets you do the thing you want to do when you get out. I’m going to emphasize that again in #2.

2. At my institution, 3 classes, maybe 4 TOPS was the limit you could do sanely and still get outside experience. Which was about 9-12 credits a semester, or 36-48 credits total. Don’t let anyone fool you— volunteering, having a library job, or getting real-time, real-world experience in a library in any way possible is critical to getting a job afterwards. You need the MSLS, but no one hires you for that alone. However, no one (reasonable) expects you to have 5+ years of experience when you’re a fresh graduate. If a job description says “must have at least 5 years of experience doing x” and combines that with “entry level position”, no. Wrong. Not entry level, don’t worry about it.

3. Advice -

3a. Definitely find your niche, or know it ahead of time if you can. Academic library? Health informatics? Archives? The more you can specify (to an extent), the better.

3b. Try to build a portfolio— class projects, website building, writing a finding aid, whatever, have a list of concrete deliverables you can point to when you’re applying and say, I did THAT. It’s incredibly helpful.

3c. I want to echo notyourstereotypicallibrarian with the play nice with your classmates advice — you will always find people you dislike or don’t get along with, but these people will be your close colleagues for the rest of your career. You will work with them, work for them, ask them for advice, and bump into them at ALA. Don’t make enemies if at all possible. I was a bit skeptical about how small people say the library community is— it really is that small!
